The games industry is one of the most exciting and fast-moving creative fields in the world. There are many different roles in games art and technology, with new opportunities constantly emerging. On our BA (Hons) Games Art and Technology degree at MetStudios, you’ll find your niche while developing the skills to stay adaptable and succeed across the industry. Here are five career paths this degree could lead you towards.
Concept artist
A concept artist creates the visual foundation for a game, designing characters, props, and environments that bring the world to life. This creative role involves using both traditional drawing and digital tools to turn ideas into detailed concept art. A concept artist’s drawings form the starting point for all in-game artwork and play an important role in shaping the game’s visual identity and marketing.
At MetStudios, you’ll develop skills in 2D and 3D workflows – from sketching to creating real-time assets – through modules such as Art Principles for Game Artists and Character Design and Sculpting.
Games technical artist
A games technical artist bridges the gap between art and programming, ensuring creative visions function within a games engine. They solve technical challenges, optimise assets, and develop tools and workflows so that art and technology work seamlessly together.
Our BA (Hons) Games Art and Technology degree prepares you for this hybrid role. Through hands-on projects, you’ll gain experience in both creative and technical aspects of game development, from 3D modelling and texturing, to real-time workflows and scripting.

Level designer
A level designer builds the playable worlds in which players explore, face challenges, and experience a game’s story. This career path involves designing layouts, placing interactive elements, and collaborating with artists, programmers, and narrative designers to ensure gameplay is engaging and balanced. Typically, level designers work from the specifications provided by game designers, focusing on shaping environments and player experiences within levels.
In our Games Art and Technology degree, you’ll develop relevant skills through modules such as Introduction to Game Engines, Introduction to Prototyping, and Environmental Storytelling, gaining practical experience in creating engaging, playable game worlds.
Multimedia specialist
A multimedia specialist combines creative and technical skills to design and develop interactive media. This includes integrating text, graphics, animation, video, audio, and virtual reality across multiple platforms. In games, this role often involves designing cinematic sequences, interactive menus, tutorials, or marketing content, while making sure all elements run smoothly in the game engine. Multimedia specialists collaborate closely with programmers, artists, and designers to ensure the final product looks great, feels engaging, and functions correctly.
At MetStudios, you’ll practise these skills in a curriculum aligned with industry practices, collaborating with peers across different courses to create professional-quality projects.
Environment artist
From the fantasy, otherworldly atmosphere of Rain World, to the striking realism of Red Dead Redemption 2, the environment of a game is what brings it to life. Environment artists handle the visual elements seen inside a level. They work closely with level designers, technical artists, and other team members to ensure each environment supports gameplay while staying true to the game’s artistic vision. This role involves modelling and texturing assets such as buildings, foliage, rocks, props, and natural features, then arranging them in-engine to create believable, visually engaging environments.
In your first year at MetStudios, core modules like Introduction to 3D Modelling and Introduction to Materials and Lighting give you the tools to build and texture assets.
Your career in games
If you’re considering a career in games, our BA (Hons) Games Art and Technology degree equips you with the skills, experience, and industry insight to succeed in a variety of creative roles. Beyond technical expertise, you’ll benefit from the guidance of experienced lecturers and course leaders, who bring years of industry experience into the classroom and help you develop a professional mindset for a competitive, fast-moving field.
