What is the BA (Hons) Games Art and Technology course?

The games, animation, and VFX industries are constantly evolving, and studios are looking for artists who can combine creativity with technical expertise. This degree is built for those who want to master 3D modelling, game design, visual effects, and interactive storytelling, creating work that resonates with players across a range of platforms. Learning here is hands-on, experimental, and fuelled by curiosity.

The course brings together cutting-edge techniques in-game engine technologies, procedural asset generation, and real-time applications for games, film, and TV. You’ll develop practical skills in 2D and 3D, shaders, character design, world-building, and constructing full game environments.

Collaboration is key to the course, as you’ll work with other MetStudios students from the Animation and Games Design and Development courses. This will allow you to experience first-hand the cooperative nature of animation and creative production.

What is the course focused on?

You’ll start your journey in games art by learning the essential 2D and 3D skills, mastering the key software, and getting a real feel for how the games industry works. You’ll create your first assets and begin developing your own style.

In the second year, you’ll push your creativity further by designing characters, environments, and props. You’ll turn ideas into polished, game-ready assets while exploring different styles and techniques to grow as a confident games artist.

In your final year, you’ll focus on your final project and professional development. You’ll build a portfolio that demonstrates your skills and creativity – ready to impress studios and launch your career.

What tools are used?

Students work with industry-standard 3D software such as Maya, ZBrush, and Substance Painter for modelling, texturing, and character creation. You’ll also use game engines like Unreal Engine and Unity to bring your worlds and assets to life, plus Adobe Creative Suite for concept art, design, and compositing.
